What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, a mental health condition that affects both children and adults. The American Psychiatric Association reports that ADHD affects 5 percent of children and 2.5 percent of adults.

It’s characterized by:

  • Inattention
  • Hyperactivity
  • Impulsivity
  • Trouble focusing
  • Difficulty organizing tasks
  • Impatience waiting for a turn or in line
  • Inability to follow instructions
  • Struggling to sit still
  • Fidgeting

You can be diagnosed at any age, but the condition begins in childhood. While some children can grow out of it, ADHD is considered chronic and typically persists into adulthood, and can negatively affect your work, relationships, and overall quality of life.

What causes ADHD?

Research shows that ADHD is caused by a combination of three factors:

Genetic

It tends to run in families. A child with a parent or sibling who has ADHD is more likely to have the condition. Likewise, you are more likely to have the disorder if a relative has it.

Environmental

Exposure to tobacco, lead, or alcohol while you were in your mother’s womb can increase your risk. Low birth rate and premature birth are also closely linked to ADHD.

Neurological

Brain structures vary and function differently–especially when it comes to impulse control and executive function–in people with ADHD. Research points to dopamine imbalances and decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex.

Contrary to common belief, ADHD is not caused by allergies, vaccines, or eating too much sugar.

How is ADHD treated?

The team at DeNova provides a comprehensive evaluation and assessment for you or your child to confirm ADHD. Your provider works closely with you to develop a custom treatment plan that may combine:

  • Behavioral therapy: the foundation of your ADHD treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps regulate your thought patterns and helps you practice time management and organization skills
  • Medications: Ritalin and Adderall stimulate brain chemicals and your central nervous system to help control your impulses
  • Lifestyle changes: a structured routine that includes regular exercise and quality sleep improves focus and minimizes hyperactivity
